Bangladesh Section (BRSA)

Bangladesh Regional Science Association

The prime objective of establishing BRSA as an association of regional scientists in Bangladesh is bringing together and fostering interdisciplinary interaction among regional science scholars in the country. It is expected that BRSA will function in close collaboration with the widely known international body The Regional Science Association International (RSAI). The initiative to form BRSA was taken by Mr. Riaz Uddin, an Urban and Regional Planner currently pursuing a PhD program in the US, at the encouragement of Professor Geoffrey Hewings from the University of Illinois. During the January 2006 Conference in Bangalore RSAI and PRSCO executives shared their interest to extend their scholarly activities to Bangladesh. Especially RSAI President Professor Robert Stimson, RSAI Executive Director Professor Graham Clarke and PRSCO Execitive Secretary Professor Yoshiro Higano warmly encouraged the creation of a forum of Regional Science in Bangladesh. Dr Fakrul Islam, Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work, University of Rajshahi and a former student of Professor Higano, also received similar encouragement from his professor. A meeting of scholars in the field was arranged by Mr. Riaz Uddin on 27 May 2005 and BRSA was born.
