Asociación Española de Ciencia Regional

The idea of creating a Spanish Association of Regional Science arose in the late 50’s and developed throughout the 60’s. The first attempts to formalise the association legally were, however, systematically rejected by the various administrations of the period. Nonetheless, a certain level of activity was kept up, with a group of important Spanish researchers and specialists involved in book publishing, gatherings of Spanish and foreign specialists, the development of university study and research as well as professional work in both private and public centres. All of this allowed for the development of subjects included within Regional Science. In December 1973, under the sponsorship of the Banco Urquijo’s Studies Service in Barcelona, a general Studies Services meeting was held which, because of the subject matter and the agreement of those participating, became the 1st Meeting of Regional Studies. The decision to create the A.E.R.C. was also taken at the same time. The 2nd Meeting of Regional Studies, following up on the first one, took place in the Canary Islands between May 2nd and 6th of 1975. Here, the first document on the Regional Problematic in Spain was approved, wherein the attitude of the potential members of the A.E.R.C. was reflected. The A.E.R.C. finally managed to become legalised on April 19th 1976, after having overcome a series of political and administrative difficulties. In the course of the 3rd Meeting of Regional Studies in Oviedo, the first general assembly of the A.E.R.C. took place, with an initial 164 members.
