| Epainos Award and Young Regional Scientist |
The Epainos Prize and EAYRS sessions are targeted to attract work by Masters and Ph.D. students, and scholars of comparable age. For participation, the author should be not older than 33 years of age (in the case of multi-authored papers, this restriction applies to each author).
The award consists of a certificate and a small grant. The jury (comprising Peter Batey, Antoine Bailly, Angelo Rossi, Raymond Florax, Erik Verhoef, and the chair of the local organizing committee of the ERSA conference) can award a first and a second prize, or a joint first prize. Prize-winning papers are considered for publication in "Papers in Regional Science," although standard review procedures apply.
These sessions are organized according to the following two principles:
* Offering more time for each presentation, in particular to increase the amount of feedback a young scientist receives on her or his paper, and to provide more opportunity for other young scientists to participate in scientific discussions.
* Assigning specialist senior discussants, experts in the specific field, to each paper that is presented. They will be asked to provide a written version of their comments, with a level of dedication that is considered normal when writing referee reports for scientific journals.
The sessions are primarily targeted to Masters and PhD students, and young scholars of comparable age. Participants should not yet have reached the age of 33 years on 1 September 2005. In case of multi-authored papers, this age limit applies for all authors.
Every participant of the Young Scientist Sessions competes for the Epainos Award, which is awarded to the best paper presented in the EAYRS Sessions. The winner will be announced during the conference dinner. The first prize winner will receive € 600. A second prize will also be awarded, comprising € 300. In case of multiple first prize or second prize winning papers, these sums will be shared.
The prize-winning papers will be considered for publication in "Papers in Regional Science". Because the paper will be subject to standard review procedures, publication is not guaranteed.

| European Prize in Regional Science awarded to professors in Dutch Universities |
The first European Prizes in Regional Science have been awarded by the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) to professors Peter Nijkamp, of the Free University of Amsterdam, and Jean Paelinck, formerly of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
The European Prize in Regional Science was created to recognize the outstanding contribution of scholars to the advancement in regional science and in related spatial area studies. The first European Prizes in Regional Science were awarded based on the recommendation of an independent jury of six eminent regional scientists from the US, Great Britain, Austria, Japan, Switzerland, and Israel. The awarding ceremony will take place on the 28th of August at the annual European Congress of Regional Science in Jyväskylä in Finland.
Both winners have had a long and prolific career expanding several decades. Peter Nijkamp has been since 1975 Professor of Regional and Urban Economics and Economic Geography at the Free University, Amsterdam. His research interest is wide-ranging and he has published dozens of books and monographs, written hundreds of articles for both high-ranking, international, scientific journals and more popular magazines. For over a decade, Peter Nijkamp played a leading role as President first of the European Regional Science Association (l979-l989) and then of the Regional Science Association International (l990-l992) and has also been a visiting professor at several universities in Europe, Asia and America. He holds Doctorates Honoris Causa from the Free University of Brussels and the Technical University in Athens. In l996, he was awarded the most prestigious Spinoza Award in the Netherlands. Peter Nijkamp is also past Chairman of the Dutch Social Science Council and past Vice-President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Since June 2002, he has served as president of the governing board of the Netherlands Research Council (NOW).
Although born in Belgium, Jean Paelinck spent a considerable part of his academic career at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. He has published more than 55 books and over 300 papers in well-known refereed journals as his early research in economic modelling evolved more toward spatial econometrics in the l970s. His presidential address at the French- speaking Regional Science Association in l982 and his book with Leo Klaasen on "Spatial Economics" are now considered classics in regional science. By presenting the general principles of interdependence, asymmetry, topology, allotopy and investment-functioning and applying them to regional research in many countries the world over, Jean Paelinck has become one of the world’s most well-known regional scientists. He is the holder of seven Honorary Doctorates, and has been honoured by the President of the Regional Science Associations. Humanist, musician and linguist—he speaks more than l0 languages—Jean Paelinck is respected by his colleagues, appreciated by his students, and a real leader, not only in regional science, but in life in general.
The fact that the Jury chose to award the first prizes to Nijkamp and Paelinck is not only a tribute to them, but also testimony of the strength of regional science in the Netherlands, whose depth and quality of researchers in the field make the country one of the world leaders in the knowledge and analysis of spatial economic phenomena.
- 2005 Winner -- Åke F. Andersson
- 2003 Winner -- Jean Paelinck
- 2002 Winner -- Peter Nijkamp
