The Hungarian Regional Science Society, the Department of Landscape Protection and Landscape Rehabilitation of MATE, the Historical and Political Geography Research Center of the University of Pécs, the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences of the University of Pécs, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Pécs are jointly organizing the XIV. Scientific Conference on Landscape History. The detailed program of the conference is available by clicking on the continue caption.
The 500th anniversary of the battle of Mohács on August 29, 1526, of world historical significance, encourages us to take stock of landscape change that goes back to historical times and spans across eras. Following the losing battle that also turned the tide on the European stage, the modern landscape history of the Carpathian Basin was dominated by Ottoman rule and then by the reconstruction led by the Habsburgs. The region saw a significant liquidation of the medieval landscape legacy, but what was created, despite obvious external influences, became a defining part of our national heritage and regional identity, and led to a characteristic landscape division. Due to the multifaceted nature of the topic, we intend to discuss the lessons of the modern landscape change of the Carpathian Basin and the interpretation of its landscape heritage at an interdisciplinary conference. The examined space and time interval can be comprehensive or narrowly tailored, however, a complex landscape history approach (examining the combined effects of nature and society) is recommended. The organizers are open to all allied sciences and related professions.
